Holding the Soil

Today, crawling through the gargantuan asparagus fronds, trying to weed the tangles of bindweed and pigweed, I was careful not to knock seedheads into the ground and instead escort them from the garden, I realized how beautiful the soil is under the overstory of noxious, colonizing ‘mean weeds’, as I refer to them. I realized that these weeds somehow hold the soil…for better things to grow.  This thought comforted me about the times we live in.

Overhead, in the elite world, everything is so fraught with mean intentions, and obsessive self preservation and greed.  It’s a tangle of complex competition and misuse of power gone amok…but underneath the mean, underneath the bombs, underneath the corporate footprint, underneath the forever chemicals, underneath the wreckage…the soil is healing.  The deeper it is, the more it is healing.  I equate this to us mothers.  We’ve endured centuries of perverse oppression, but deep inside ourselves, deep inside the constellation of each other and our togetherness, we are healing.

Healing for me is making broken things whole again, refashioning them with a newfound and more complex beauty.  So as we build our Motherline across the planet that has no borders other than where the sea meets shore and sky meets stars, we are whole.  A whole line, thickly braided, can stand so strong.  I refuse to believe that a mother’s love isn’t big enough to protect the planet from the extractive transgression of exponential growth for the benefit of a few.

The same way the trees are communicating through mycelium under the earth, so are we communicating with each other about how we will heal our planet, by understanding her, by getting to know her as intimately as possible.  And so we dance with her, literally. And metaphorically. And as we gain understanding, we gain capacity to protect.  Mother mycelium is a force that only gains power over the long arc of time.  It’s never too late as long as that mycelium is growing exponentially.  Do you feel it?  Reaching from the ground into the soles of your feet?  We are here….other mothers….reaching out to connect with you.
